Although the design of the hotel follows FRENCH COLONIAL Style (the late 1800s to the early 1900s), HOTEL ROYAL pays homage to the real-life love story from 1600s between Sotaro Araki, a wealthy JAPANESE merchant from Nagasaki (Kyushu Region) , and Princess Ngoc Hoa, a VIETNAMESE aristocrat from the royal family in Hue.
Meeting in HOI AN during its trading golden age, they married in 1619 and moved to Japan, marking what is widely believed to be the first marriage between a Japanese citizen and a foreigner, so as a Vietnamese citizen and a foreigner.
Japan’s strict SAKOKU policy (National Isolation) by TOKUGAWA Shogunate began soon after, the princess never had a chance to visit her own country. Their direct descendants still reside in Kyushu Region and are continuing their legacy.
